We pay tribute to the life and music of Horace Silver, who passed away this week. An important and influential musician, Horace helped found the hard-bop movement with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. His music was firmly rooted in the blues, with a hard driving swing. His compositions are some of the greatest jazz standards, and we will hear from Horace himself as well as covers from Jimmy Smith and Greg Abate. We also get a phone call from Raynel Frasier to tell us about her Umoja Jazz Series of free concerts in Hartford.

This podcast will take you back to the heady days of 70s Jazz/Rock Fusion as well as some of the progressive rock that is inspired by jazz. It all starts with a classic Santana track and the funk of TOP. Herbie Hancock took that funk sound and added his jazzy keyboard chops on the Fender Rhodes. Larry Coryell shows how fusion is done with guitar jams. Chick took that latin bossa beat and electrified it on his standard, Spain. The rock group War fused funk, R&B and jazz. Weather Report recorded some landmark albums with their own unique electronic sound. The set ends with two great guitarists of that era, John McLaughlin and George Benson, with different approaches to their axe.

We throw in some Archie Shepp as it is his birthday as well. While we are at it lets bring in Trane to the mix too.
