This podcast showcases some great pianists. Among those featured are Robert Glasper, with a new CD to be released this week, and Joey Calderazzo, who we were very impressed with at the Newport Jazz Festival two weeks ago. Also in the mix are two smokin' tracks by the incomparable McCoy Tyner. The two recordings are from the 1970's, when Tyner was at the top of his game.

I covered the 2009 Newport Jazz Festival for WHUS and this blog/podcast. Coverage of the event consisted of a NJF Preview show, a written review of the event, photo gallery, and a Post Festival review podcast. They are all presented here for your viewing, reading and listening pleasure. I also included a link to NPR's excellent coverage of the event that includes recorded performances that you can download as a podcast or listen to as streaming audio. Enjoy!

I am at Newport Jazz Festivial this week, so I didn't have my regular show on WHUS. Here is a show I did in another time slot. Kind of rocked out on this one. Hope you enjoy.

George Wein has put together a creative and artistic lineup for the 55th Newport Jazz Festival. From legendary masters like Tony Bennet and Dave Brubeck, to the lions of jazz like Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, to the avante garde like Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthapa. Even Hip-Hop is represented with Mos Def. This is going to be an exciting festival.

Monday July 20th marks the 40th anniversary of Appollo 14 walk on the moon. A pretty amazing feat for 1969. This has little or nothing to do with this weeks jazz program, but I couldn't think of a theme or a name for the show. Actually one tracks on this show is titled "Lunar", from one of our favorite alto sax players, Mike DiRubbo, so we might as well use his fine newly released CD as our featured album of the week.

This podcast is the second hour of my radio show from last week, but it is a good one. We start out with the one and only Trane from a fine album, Coltrane's Sound. We then take it beyond with George Schuller and Ed Palermo. Following that is a set featuring some great Monk composition's as interpreted by others, than Monk and Trane. We settle things down nicely with some Evan's like piano trio music by a great artist, Robert Glasper. Playlist Track * Artist * Album 26-2 * John Coltrane * Coltrane's Sound Common Mama * George Schuller's Circle Wide * Like Before, Somewhat After Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? * Ed Palermo Big Band * Eddy Loves Frank Bemsha Swing * Esbjorn Svensson Trio * Plays Monk Evidence * Bobby Broom * Plays for Monk Nutty * Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane * At Carnegie Hall Monk Walks * Dapp Theory * Layers of Chance Blue Skies * Robert Glasper Trio * Mood
