It's been way TOO DAMN HOT here in Connecticut as well as other parts of the country. This podcast, and a tall iced lemonade will help you to chill out in this heat. Dr. Lonnie Smith brings it on with a slow groove aptly named for tonight's show. Joshua Redman picks it up with his version of the Summertime classic. We also feature some great young pianists making the jazz scene in Joel Holmes, Hartford's own Jen Allen, and Taylor Eigsti (also accompanying Gretchen Parlato on a couple tracks). Another fine pianist, Warren Byrd is represented here doing some Monk, with some cool trumpet work from Saskia Laroo from their brand new CD.

The jazz shelves at WHUS just got restocked with some new stuff. I wanted to feature these CD's on the show so we will hear new releases from artists like Gretchen Parlato, Karrin Allyson, Ben Williams, Noah Preminger, Sean Jones, and more. These are some great CD's and I will feature more from these albums in the coming weeks. Noah Preminger will be appearing here in Hartford, CT at Black Eyed Sally's Monday July 18. It's a show you don't want to miss.

There are so many great talented jazz artists that don't get the notoriety of Joshua Redman, Marsalis Family, Chick, and others. We try to feature these musicians on In The Groove as much as possible. This show is comprised entirely of these artists. We start out with some Rochester cats, Mike Melito and Paradigm Shift. Then head to Boston's Akashic Record and Jared Sims and back to New York City with where Assf Kehati and Michael Feinberg are making some waves in the Jazz Scene.

This show recaps our Friday night hitting the NYC jazz clubs. We saw Donald Harrison's Treme show, Joel Holmes Trio and The John Fedchock NY Sextet (featuring Walt Weiskopf). It was a great night and doing this show lets me share some of that music with you. Please note that apparently I was looking at the wrong liner notes when I gave the personnel for the Donald Harrison tracks. See below for the impressive lineup on those tracks.

Its sort of a tradition on Father's Day to begin the show with Horace Silver's classic Song For My Father. Cannonball's cool One For Daddy-O continues on that theme. Next up is a Curtis Brothers set to get us ready for their live gig that evening. Later in the show we have a set as requested by my lovely wife Claire featuring Ornette Coleman's unique take on the blues, Dave Douglas and Stan Getz with Chick Corea. The show concludes with a rousing performance of Sweet Georgia Brown by clarinetist Anat Cohen.

This podcast is a reprise of a podcast from May 16 2010, due to a preemption of my radio show this week. Tenor saxophone is front and center on this show. We'll hear some jazz artists from today's generation of tenor players along with some grand masters of the past. Representing players on the scene today are Marcus Strickland, Jimmy Greene and Abraham Burton. Of course there are so many great players out there, that it would be impossible to hear them all on one broadcast. From the past, two of the greatest are represented here with Ben Webster and Lester Young.

Quite an eclectic show. It all starts off with some swinging Joshua Redman, early in his career (1995). It continues with some New Orleans sounds from Skerik and John Ellis. Then we begin our ascent into the avant garde with Greg Osby and then full out (out to lunch) with Eric Dolphy. We then come back down to earth with some gorgeous piano work from Yoko Miwa to conclude this show.
