This year's Newport Jazz Festival promises to be a great one. We play many of the artists that will be appearing during the 3 day festival (July 29 - 31). You'll hear from some of the 50+ artists that will be performing in this historic jazz festival. I'll be there to report live via social networking (facebook, twitter, instagram), and a review on WWUH in coming weeks. But it is best to experience the festival live. You can get more information and purchase tickets at www.newportjazzfest.org .

After a week dominated by racial injustice, protest and violence this broadcast takes on a contemplative tone. Tyner's Search for Peace seemed an appropriate way to lead off the show. A Jimmy Greene set is also featured here to review his recent performance at Wesleyan U this week. Other artists represented are Shirley Horn, Cecile Salvant, Buster Williams, Alan Ferber and Hiromi.

This playlist is mostly a review of NYC jazz artists that I heard live on a recent trip to the big apple. We saw six bands, and they are represented here. Monday nights have NYC regulars Mingus Big Band at the Jazz Standard, and Mike Stern at 55Bar. Stanley Cowell was at the venerable Village Vanguard. David Binney and Sheryl Bailey made it three stops at 55Bar which features up and coming jazz players. The last stop was uptown at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club where pianist Victor Gould was celebrating the release of his new CD with his sextet. This CD also features new albums by Kenny Garrett and Hiromi.

Following something new from Pat Metheny, is a set inspired by early American music. Jane Ira Bloom, JD Allen and Noah Preminger have all released music with roots in Native American or Delta Blues. Also in this podcast is new music from Kris Allen, Steve Davis, Cuong Vu and a Beatles cover from John Daversa.
