Tenor saxophone players dominate this week's podcast. Turrentine, Henderson and Getz are perhaps best known. However, the next generation players are placing there mark on the jazz scene, like Joshua Redman, Jimmy Greene and Jovan Alexandre. Also on this podcast is young Jacob Collier and Carlos Santana. We wrap up with another great tenor player, Gato Barbiera.

The Pocket

The featured album this week is from Connecticut native Phil Bowler with his debut recording as a leader. His group Pocket Jungle definitely plays 'in the pocket'. We start out the podcast with a beautiful duet from Laurence Hobgood playing a piano/bass duet with the late great Charlie Haden. The "Made in CT" theme continues with new music from Jovan Alexandre and Joshua Bruneau. Great sax player Joshua Redman (James Farm) and Joe Henderson are also heard on this show.

Mystery Train

While digital music and streaming services makes music almost too easy to find, you can still feel that excitement of discovering great albums at used record stores. Mystery Train is a great one in Gloucester MA that I always hit up when I am in the area. Recently I picked up some monster CD's there. I feature those on this show. You'll hear from Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheny, Ella and Louis, and Miles. We were in the North Shore area to see a concert at the beautiful Shaulin Lui Performance Center in Rockport Mass to see The Bad Plus with Joshua Redman, so I play some of their music too.
